At least six people have died after Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought heavy rain, flooding and landslides to Mexico’s Pacific coast, authorities said on Tuesday.

Simon remained a Category 1 hurricane off the coast, moving slowly and bringing heavy rainfall to Nayarit and Sinaloa, where authorities were monitoring rising rivers and the risk of further flooding.

The storm had already caused one death in Guerrero, southern Mexico, over the weekend, when heavy rain battered the state.

Further north, in Ensenada, Baja California, flooding associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel killed at least five people, accounting for most of the reported deaths.

Authorities remained on alert as continued rainfall threatened to worsen flooding and trigger further landslides.
