Meta Platforms has committed to more than one gigawatt of computing capacity under an expanded agreement with Broadcom, as it accelerates investment in infrastructure to support artificial intelligence across its platforms.

The deal extends the companies’ collaboration on custom AI processors through 2029 and represents the first phase of a broader multi-gigawatt rollout. The initial capacity is comparable to the electricity consumption of roughly 750,000 average US homes.

The move comes as demand for AI computing intensifies, pushing large technology groups to design proprietary chips and limit dependence on Nvidia.

Broadcom will continue to co-develop multiple generations of custom processors with Meta and supply Ethernet networking technology. Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan will leave Meta’s board and transition to an advisory role.

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the partnership would help build the computing foundation required to deliver advanced AI systems at scale.

Overall, Meta’s commitment of over 1 gigawatt highlights the massive infrastructure investments required to support the rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies.
