Melania Trump to Host Russian and Ukrainian Representatives After Oleshky Ceasefire

US First Lady Melania Trump will host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on Thursday, November 5, following a humanitarian ceasefire in the occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky that she helped facilitate.

The planned meeting marks an unusual diplomatic initiative by a US first lady, bringing representatives of the two countries together after a localised truce enabled humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuations in Ukraine's southern Kherson region.

The White House announced the meeting on Tuesday, saying Melania Trump had independently initiated engagement between Moscow and Kyiv and helped secure the ceasefire in Oleshky and surrounding areas.

She is scheduled to deliver remarks on the agreement at 11am Eastern Time on Thursday. The White House announcement did not initially identify the representatives expected to attend or indicate whether the meeting would involve formal negotiations.

The ceasefire, which ran from October 27 to November 2, was designed to allow emergency supplies, including food and medicine, to reach residents of Oleshky, while providing a safe passage for civilians wishing to leave the Russian-occupied town.

Nearly 800 people were evacuated during the humanitarian operation, according to accounts reported by international media. The town had been largely cut off from essential supplies, with an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents remaining before the operation.

Melania Trump's involvement followed earlier efforts to establish communication channels between Russian and Ukrainian officials over the reunification of children separated from their families during the war.

The humanitarian initiative brought together officials responsible for coordinating the evacuation and aid operation, including the two countries' human rights representatives.

However, the localised ceasefire did not extend to the wider conflict. Fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine, highlighting the limits of the arrangement in addressing the wider war.

The White House meeting also comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts involving Washington, Moscow and Kyiv. A separate round of US-mediated trilateral discussions is scheduled for November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi, with the wider negotiations expected to address efforts to end the war.
