Ryan Wesley Routh was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, a federal jury having found him guilty on all five counts, including firearms charges. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon handed down the sentence in Florida, roughly four months after Routh’s conviction.

The attack occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September 2024, weeks before the presidential election. Routh, 59, was spotted by a Secret Service agent aiming a gun through a tree line near the golf course’s sixth hole. He was apprehended after firing on officers and fleeing the scene, while Trump, at a nearby hole, was evacuated safely.

This was the second attempt on Trump’s life during the 2024 campaign. A previous attack in Pennsylvania involved a sniper who wounded Trump in the ear and killed a supporter; the assailant, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement.

The Justice Department argued for a life sentence, citing Routh’s extensive planning, determination, and lack of remorse. Prosecutors noted he had taken steps over several months to carry out the attack, was willing to kill anyone in his way, and admitted his goal was to prevent Trump from being elected.

“Ryan Routh’s heinous attempted assassination of President Trump was not only an attack on our President, it was a direct assault against our entire democratic system,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said, according to Bloomberg’s report.
