A 55-year-old man was arrested in Minnesota after allegedly spraying an unknown liquid at Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting, local police said.

According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Anthony James Kazmirczyk, suddenly stood up and sprayed Omar with a substance from a syringe. A BBC reporter at the scene described the liquid as having a chemical-like composition and a pungent odor.

Kazmirczyk was taken into custody immediately. Police said a forensic examination of the substance is underway. He has been charged with third-degree assault.

Witnesses reported that the man said, “We are fighting each other,” as he exited the city hall following the incident.
