France and Rwanda on Tuesday jointly inaugurated a memorial in Paris dedicated to the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis, in a ceremony attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The site, located on the banks of the Seine in the French capital, is named “L’Archive” and was designed by Portuguese artist Grada Kilomba.

During the inauguration, Macron said the memorial placed the genocide “at the heart of our capital and our history”, describing it as “the culmination of a long and painstaking quest for the truth”.

The ceremony comes amid a gradual reset in relations between Paris and Kigali, following years of Rwandan accusations that France was complicit in the 1994 killings.
