Safaricom has added a PayPal withdrawal feature to its M-PESA super app, easing cross-border payments for Kenya’s growing digital workforce.
The upgrade, announced Wednesday, allows users to transfer funds from their PayPal accounts directly within the M-PESA app, removing the need for external websites or third-party platforms.
Kenya has seen a surge in digital freelancing, with thousands of workers earning income online through platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr and direct client contracts. Many rely on PayPal to receive international payments.
Previously, freelancers had to use separate portals to withdraw funds, often facing delays, fees and unreliable service. The new feature streamlines the process, enabling faster and more convenient transactions.
The integration is powered by Thunes, a global cross-border payments provider, and is designed to ensure secure and compliant transfers.
Safaricom said the new tool supports its broader push to transform M-PESA into a full-service digital financial platform, expanding its use beyond peer-to-peer transfers to include payments, savings, loans and international remittances.
