More than 40 people have been killed in repeated landslides in the mountainous border areas of Kenya and Uganda over the past week.

There are still missing and unaccounted for people along the borders of both countries, and rescue workers are continuing their search.

Warnings have been issued for more landslides in the area.

"The risk of landslides increases with heavy rains in various parts of the country, especially in the Kerio Valley region," said Kenya's Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen.

They said residents in the area should carefully monitor any ground conditions and that local authorities would relocate people at risk to better locations.

Experts have been warning against building houses in areas prone to landslides in Kenya and Uganda.

In 2010, at least 300 people died in a landslide in Bududa, Uganda, in what was the country's worst natural disaster.
