Kosovo Opposition Lawmaker Throws Eggs At Acting Prime Minister

Kosovo’s newly elected parliament was forced to suspend its inaugural session after an opposition lawmaker threw eggs at acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, highlighting the political deadlock that has persisted despite a snap election in June. The confrontation occurred as lawmakers attempted to constitute the 120-member parliament elected on June 7. Kurti’s Vetëvendosje party won the largest share of the vote but fell short of the majority needed to form a government alone.

The June election was Kosovo’s third parliamentary vote in about 18 months, following a prolonged political crisis that included the failure of lawmakers to elect a president within the constitutional deadline. The latest parliament has yet to produce a governing majority, leaving Kurti’s party dependent on support from other political groups to establish a government.

The session descended into disorder when opposition MP Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at Kurti. The proceedings were subsequently suspended. The confrontation came as lawmakers faced the challenge of forming functioning state institutions after months of political paralysis. The June election had been called as an attempt to resolve the impasse, but the difficulties in constituting parliament have extended the uncertainty.

Kurti has remained acting prime minister while political parties negotiate over the formation of a new government.
