King Charles has called for continued unity between the United Kingdom and the United States in defending democracy and shared security interests, speaking during a rare address to a joint session of the US Congress in Washington on Tuesday.

The monarch told lawmakers that despite differences between allies, both countries remain committed to protecting democratic systems and supporting those serving in defence of their nations. “Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy,” he said.

His remarks came during a visit marked by diplomatic sensitivity, as divisions persist between Washington and European partners over global conflicts, including security tensions in the Middle East and Europe.

Charles cautioned against inward-looking policies and stressed the importance of sustained international cooperation. He said he “prayed with all [his] heart” that the UK and US would continue defending shared values with partners in Europe and the Commonwealth.

The king referenced long-standing military cooperation, citing efforts through the Second World War and the Cold War. “That same unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine, and her most courageous people,” he added.

The address was only the second by a British monarch to the US Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II’s speech in 1991. The visit unfolded against a backdrop of strained transatlantic discussions over NATO responsibilities and military support.
