Prominent Kenyan politician Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80, family sources have told the BBC.

Odinga's death was announced while he was in India for medical treatment.

Indian police said Odinga died after being rushed to a nearby hospital after "suddenly collapsing" while with family members and his personal doctor.

Unconfirmed rumors have been circulating about Odinga's health in recent weeks, with family members and political allies denying reports that he is seriously ill.

Odinga has run for president five times, but voters have consistently turned their backs on him.

He first ran for the presidency in 2008, when he was prime minister.

Odinga's repeated attempts to seize the presidency have failed. He has repeatedly claimed that the election was rigged.

Former President Mwai Kibaki's claims that the 2007 election was rigged plunged Kenya into a deep crisis.

In the post-election violence, 1,200 people were killed and more than 500,000 were displaced.
