Kenya, Tanzania Strengthen Joint Border Security Measures

Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to strengthen security cooperation along their shared border, with military commanders from both countries discussing measures to address illegal immigration, organised crime and other cross-border threats.

The discussions took place on September 24 in Kajiado County during the second Proximity Commanders Security Meeting between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF).

The meeting was co-chaired by Major General Luka Kutto, General Officer Commanding Kenya’s Eastern Command, and Brigadier General Paul Masinde of the TPDF. Senior military leaders and security officials from both countries reviewed emerging security concerns along the border and mechanisms for coordinated responses.

The commanders discussed strengthening border surveillance through regular and impromptu patrols and maintaining a sustained security presence to deter criminal activity.

Illegal immigration was also a focus, with the two sides calling for closer coordination among security agencies responsible for monitoring movement through shared border points.

The delegations further stressed the need for timely intelligence and information sharing to counter transnational organised crime. They said stronger communication between security agencies would support faster responses to emerging threats and improve coordination against cross-border criminal networks.

The meeting built on recommendations from the first engagement, including improving border security infrastructure, increasing community engagement and developing a bilateral framework for cooperation.

The KDF and TPDF said continued engagement would help strengthen operational coordination and support peace and security along the Kenya-Tanzania border.
