Kenya is seeking to attract investment and expand domestic manufacturing of medical consumables as the government works to strengthen health-product supply chains and reduce reliance on imports.

Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr Ouma Oluga held talks with a World Bank team led by Operations Officer and Task Team Leader Ronald Rateiwa and Co-Task Team Leader and Senior Economist Rachel K. Sebudde at Afya House on Friday.

The meeting reviewed findings from the Kenya Country Private Sector Diagnostic 2.0, with discussions focused on opportunities to attract private investment and expand local production of medical consumables.

The discussions covered public procurement, regulatory processes and market access, according to the Ministry of Health.

Oluga said the diagnostic should align with government reforms aimed at strengthening health-product supply chains and supporting domestic manufacturers.

The engagement is expected to identify areas for collaboration to strengthen health security and advance Universal Health Coverage, while improving the capacity of Kenyan manufacturers to supply domestic, regional and African markets.

The initiative comes as Kenya seeks to develop local manufacturing capacity in the health sector, with procurement and market access identified as key factors affecting the ability of domestic producers to scale.
