Kenya, Qatar Agree to Annual Political Consultations as Investment and Trade Ties Deepen

Kenya and Qatar have agreed to hold annual bilateral political consultations, establishing a formal mechanism for regular dialogue as the two countries seek to expand cooperation in trade, investment, labour and other sectors.

The agreement was reached during the inaugural consultations led by Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Korir Sing’Oei, and Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi, secretary-general of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kenya used the talks to seek greater Qatari investment in renewable energy, agriculture, infrastructure, logistics, tourism and Special Economic Zones. It also invited Qatar to participate in Kenya’s 200 million US dollar Green Investment Fund.

The two sides discussed cooperation across trade and investment, agriculture and food security, labour mobility, aviation, tourism, education, youth, sports, climate action and multilateral affairs.

Labour mobility was also a key issue, with both countries agreeing to accelerate discussions on reviewing their 2012 Bilateral Labour Agreement. Kenya welcomed continued employment opportunities for its citizens in Qatar, where more than 70,000 Kenyans live and work.

Kenya also asked Qatar to reconsider restrictions affecting Kenyan meat exports. The two governments agreed that their respective technical authorities would continue discussions to reach a mutually acceptable solution.

Aviation cooperation is set to expand through Kenya Airways and Qatar Airways, with the countries welcoming opportunities to increase air connectivity and cargo operations and to pursue further collaboration in the sector.

The consultations also established a timetable for the next round of talks, which will be held in Nairobi in 2027.

The annual consultations are intended to provide a framework for following up on agreements and expanding cooperation between the two countries across economic, political and social areas.
