Kenya and Malawi have discussed ways to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism, with a focus on intelligence sharing, terrorist financing and threats linked to emerging technologies.

The discussions took place on October 7, when Kenya’s National Counter Terrorism Centre hosted a delegation from the Malawi Defence Force Senior Command and Staff Course No. 5 of 2026.

The delegation was led by Major General V. P. S. Moyo, commandant of the Malawi Defence Force Senior Command and Staff College, and received by the Kenyan centre’s leadership, headed by Deputy Director General Brigadier Yahya Mohamed.

The meeting gave the visiting officers an overview of Kenya’s counterterrorism framework and its response to changing regional and international security threats.

Discussions covered efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism, disrupt terrorist financing and address threats involving cyber platforms and emerging technologies. Participants also examined intelligence-led operations, coordination among security agencies and the role of community resilience in preventing terrorist activity.

Mohamed stressed the importance of anticipating emerging threats rather than responding only after attacks or other security incidents occur. He also highlighted the need to strengthen intelligence capabilities.

The engagement reflects efforts to promote professional knowledge exchange between African security institutions as militant networks and their methods increasingly cross national borders.
