Heavy rains in Kenya have triggered floods and landslides that have killed 18 people, the national police service said on Sunday, as the country's rainy season intensifies.

The fatalities were recorded after landslides struck parts of Tharaka Nithi, Elgeyo-Marakwe and Kiambu counties in central and eastern Kenya, following sustained downpours, according to police.

In a statement, the National Police Service confirmed the death toll, saying the service has confirmed the loss of 18 lives as a result of these incidents, underscoring the grave danger posed by the ongoing weather conditions.

The East African country is currently in the peak of its March-to-May rainy season, which has brought persistent heavy rainfall across several regions.

Authorities said the weather has also led to damage to infrastructure and displacement of residents in affected areas, as flooding continues to disrupt normal activity in parts of the country.

Emergency response efforts are ongoing as authorities monitor areas at risk of further landslides and flooding linked to continued rainfall.
