The Research also indicates that Ethiopia is one of the countries in the world where journalists face high levels of political interference and acts that threaten their professional freedom.

In a survey of 363 Ethiopian journalists who were part of the 2023/24 World Journalism Survey (WJS), 26.7 percent said they had been imprisoned or released from prison in the past five years

According to a new study by researcher Rye Skardal and conducted by the Fojo Media Institute, this result is significantly higher than the global average of 3.7 percent.

The Research based on interviews with 60 journalists, warns that threats, arrests, and harassment by state and non-state actors pose a threat to the safety of the media.

It has also been confirmed that journalists working in conflict-affected regions such as Amhara, Oromia, and Benishangul-Gumuz face the greatest risk.
