Japan is pursuing direct diplomatic engagement with both the United States and Iran as tensions rise over the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that Tokyo is seeking phone calls with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the ongoing crisis.

Takaichi told parliament that communication with both sides is essential. The initiative reflects Japan’s effort to act as an intermediary amid escalating hostilities in the region. Japan’s foreign ministry has also been active behind the scenes, with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi speaking with Iranian officials.

The government said it is exploring alternative measures to secure the safe passage of Japanese commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that carries a large portion of the country’s energy imports. Japan imports more than 90 percent of its crude oil from the region.

Takaichi’s planned engagement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has set a deadline for Iran to reopen the strait, warning of potential military action if compliance is not achieved. Japanese officials said Tokyo aims to stabilise the situation through dialogue rather than confrontation.

This initiative marks Japan’s first direct outreach to Iran at the presidential level since the escalation of the conflict in early 2026. The move underscores Japan’s strategic interest in maintaining stability in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Businesses in energy, shipping and insurance sectors are closely monitoring Japan’s mediation efforts, as any successful de-escalation could ease pressure on global oil prices and trade routes.

The diplomatic push highlights Japan’s traditional role as a mediator in international crises and its strong economic stake in the safe flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz.

Overall, Japan’s active engagement represents an important effort to reduce tensions and protect vital global energy supply lines through peaceful dialogue.
