Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara, who defeated two of his main rivals, has won a majority of votes to secure a fourth term as president.

Alassane Ouattara, 83, was declared the winner with 89.8% of the vote. In second place was former Trade Minister Jean-Louis Billon with 3.09%.

The president's bid for a fourth term is hardly surprising. His main rivals, former President Laurent Gbagbo and businessman Tidaje Thiam, have called on the public not to participate in the election after it was suspended.

Former President Simon Gagbo's wife was allowed to participate in the election, receiving 2.42% of the vote.

The country's electoral board said 50.1% of the total voter turnout was recorded.

The results from various states have been counted and announced; the electoral board will announce the overall results after investigating complaints.

Opposition leaders Laurent Gagbo and Tidaje Thiem, who were banned from participating in the election, said on Sunday they would not accept the election.
