Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said two Italian pro-Palestinian activists detained in Libya have been released after nearly a month in custody and are expected to return to Italy on Wednesday.

Tajani said the two Italians, along with a Uruguayan national who also holds Italian citizenship, were handed over to Italy’s consul in Benghazi, according to a statement posted on social media platform X.

The activists were part of a separate group linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla movement, which sought to reach Gaza through a land route rather than the maritime mission intercepted by Israeli forces last month.

The maritime operation involved Israeli forces detaining hundreds of activists aboard dozens of vessels in international waters as they attempted to deliver aid supplies to the Gaza Strip.

The Global Sumud Flotilla said the activists detained in Libya had launched a hunger strike to protest their detention and what they described as mistreatment.

Tajani did not provide details on the circumstances surrounding the release but said Italian authorities had secured the return arrangements for the three individuals.
