Italian sports journalist Luca Esposito has been found dead in Eboli, in the province of Salerno, with reports indicating that he may have been shot before his body was set on fire. Esposito, whose legal first name was Luigi, worked as a freelance sports reporter for several media outlets while also being employed by the Regional Environmental Agency (ARPAC).

He served as editor-in-chief of local football news website Tuttosalernitana.com and contributed to the daily newspaper La Città di Salerno. He was also known as a football commentator for television channel Otto Channel. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.

The case comes amid continued international efforts to improve journalist safety and address impunity for crimes against media workers. UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness initiatives, capacity-building programmes and coordination of the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
