Israel will revoke the licenses of 37 aid organizations operating in Gaza and the occupied West Bank for failing to comply with a new law, authorities said. The affected groups include prominent NGOs such as ActionAid, the International Rescue Committee, and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

The revocations, effective from the first day of the European New Year, will force the agencies to cease operations within 60 days, according to reports. Israeli officials cited, among other issues, the organizations’ failure to provide a complete list of their staff.

The decision has drawn strong criticism from foreign ministers from 10 countries, including the UK Foreign Secretary, who described the law as “repressive” and “unacceptable.” A joint statement from the UK, France, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Japan, Norway, and Switzerland warned that the closures would “have a significant impact on basic services, including health services.”

The United Nations said the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains “dire” and urged the Israeli government to ensure aid agencies can operate in a “sustainable and accountable manner.”
