Israel said its forces struck military targets in western and central Iran on Monday after Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward Israeli territory in an escalation that threatened ongoing US-led diplomatic efforts.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the missile attack targeted the Ramat David air base near Nazareth. The Israeli military said it detected missiles launched from Iran and that its air defence systems intercepted them.

Hours later, Israel announced strikes on Iranian military positions, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards accused Israel of using air-launched ballistic missiles in attacks inside the country.

The latest exchange came despite reported efforts by President Donald Trump to discourage further Israeli military action as Washington pursues negotiations with Tehran.

Trump earlier said new attacks by Israel and Iran would not derail his administration’s peace talks with Tehran and added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “doesn’t call the shots.”
