Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The decision was made by Iran’s powerful Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for selecting the country’s top religious and political authority.

Mojtaba Khamenei, a conservative cleric in his mid-50s, has long been considered an influential figure behind the scenes within Iran’s political system. Although he has never held elected office, he developed strong ties with senior clerics and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to Reuters, the leadership transition is widely seen as a defiant response to foreign pressure and signals that Iran’s political establishment intends to maintain a hardline stance during the escalating regional conflict.

The appointment has also sparked debate both inside and outside Iran. Some critics argue that the move resembles a hereditary transfer of power, something the Islamic Republic originally sought to avoid after the 1979 revolution. Others believe the leadership change could further intensify tensions in the Middle East.
