In Springfield, Virginia—just outside Washington, D.C.—a group of fitness enthusiasts gathers twice a week on a local high school football field for an outdoor workout led by Hype Fitness & Wellness.

The core of Hype Fitness & Wellness lives online, where members join virtual workouts Monday through Friday from wherever they are—at home, in their office, or even while traveling.

This flexible format allows busy professionals and beginners to stay consistent without the barriers of commuting to a gym or adjusting their schedule around crowded fitness classes.

“Fitness should adapt to your life,” Sahlu explains. “Our virtual sessions allow people to stay active no matter where they are. The outdoor workouts are simply a way to bring the community together locally.”

A Movement That Started During the Pandemic

The idea began during the COVID-19 pandemic when gyms shut down and routines disappeared overnight. Instead of stopping his workouts, Sahlu opened a Zoom room and invited a few people to join him.

“When 15 people showed up, I realized people were not just looking for workouts. They were looking for community and encouragement.”

Unlike traditional gyms, Hype Fitness does not rely on expensive equipment or complex routines. In fact, the company has no physical gym—and that’s intentional.

On a cold morning, the group pushed through their outdoor workout despite freezing temperatures—laughing, encouraging each other, and finishing stronger than they started.

Afterward, they headed to a nearby Ethiopian restaurant for breakfast and conversation.
