Hundreds of people are missing after sudden flash floods and mudslides struck Nepal, with many feared dead, including tourists, as rescue teams work to reach affected communities and assess the scale of the destruction.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on August 26 that reports from Nepal indicated hundreds remained missing following the disaster, which had caused widespread deaths and destruction.

The floods and mudslides swept through settlements and markets, while roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure were damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Several roads have been cut off and electricity supplies disrupted.

The disaster has also prompted a regional response, with Bangladesh expressing solidarity with Nepal and offering assistance with rescue and relief operations.

"The people of Bangladesh are shocked and saddened by the sudden flash floods and mudslide in Nepal causing death and destruction," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Bangladeshi government expressed condolences to those killed and said it hoped for the early recovery and treatment of people who remain missing. It said Bangladesh was ready to assist Nepal "in any possible way" with relief and rescue efforts.

The United Nations said about 10,000 households in Nepal were in need of immediate relief, based on information from local authorities.

UN agencies and humanitarian partners are supporting Nepal’s government-led response and helping assess the humanitarian needs. Lila Pieters Yahia, the UN resident coordinator in Nepal, is coordinating relief efforts with partners.

The UN also reported casualties and significant destruction in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region following separate flooding.

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres was saddened by the flooding in Nepal and China, which had claimed lives, left people missing and caused widespread destruction.
