Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire with Israel in Gaza and a proposal by the Palestinians to release hostages, sources have told the BBC.

The proposal submitted by Egypt and Qatar is said to be based on a framework presented by US envoy Steve Witkoff in June.

During the first 60 days of the ceasefire, Hamas will release half of the remaining 50 Israeli hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, in two groups.

It is said that there will be negotiations on a permanent ceasefire during this period.

It is unclear what the response will be, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said last week that it would only accept the deal if "all the hostages are released at once."
