When Medhin Solomon, the founder of HabeshanSpirit—a fast-growing Instagram account that shares educational clips and quotes from influential Ethiopian business leaders—was in high school, he found inspiration in short videos of celebrities and entrepreneurs abroad discussing their financial journeys.

A few months before graduation, Medhin had an idea: why not create a similar platform, but focused on Ethiopian voices? On April 19, 2022, he launched his first account, WealthyHabesha, with a mission to educate followers on business and finance through content from respected and trusted Ethiopian figures.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Podcast interviews were booming in popularity, and Ethiopia’s youth were becoming increasingly passionate about entrepreneurship. WealthyHabesha began posting motivational quotes and compelling video clips, resonating with aspiring entrepreneurs and money-conscious followers alike.

At first, his family wasn’t convinced.

“They didn’t like the idea in the beginning,” Medhin says. “But once the account started gaining followers, they came around.”

His friends, however, supported him from the start.

“They understood how powerful social media could be, especially with a large following.”

By August 2023, WealthyHabesha had over 40,000 followers and was growing by the day. For Medhin—still a high school student—it was a dream come true. Ethiopians from around the globe were tuning in to hear messages of financial empowerment.

Then came a surprising twist. In September 2023, an Australian company made a lucrative offer to buy the account—an amount few teenagers could ignore. Medhin accepted.

“I shouldn’t have sold WealthyHabesha,” he reflects. “It was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. I still think about it.”

But he didn’t stay away from content creation for long. On October 19, 2024, Medhin launched HabeshanSpirit—a new platform with the same mission, but a stronger resolve.

“This time, I’m never selling it,” he says.

From its logo to its curated interviews and bite-sized quotes, HabeshanSpirit is crafted for those hungry to learn from Ethiopia’s most driven minds.

One of the most popular posts on the account features a powerful quote:

“You need money—people treat you differently when you don’t have it. No one cares until you succeed. So go work for it.”

That post has earned over 350,000 views.

Another highly shared clip shows a man speaking passionately from his car:

“If you don’t want to live with regret, stop playing it safe. Chase your dream before it’s too late.”
That video has over 45,000 views.

Medhin spends hours each week analyzing interviews and selecting the most impactful moments.

“Watching one full podcast and clipping the right parts takes me about four hours,” he says.

Now a Business Management student at Addis Ababa University, Medhin balances his studies with daily content creation and editing work to support himself. In the process, he’s learned more than he expected.

“My understanding of business and money management has grown so much. Just managing WealthyHabeshaand now HabeshanSpirit has taught me things no classroom ever did.”

He has big plans for the future.

“I want HabeshanSpirit to become a place where people come to learn about success, money, and mindset,” he says. “Eventually, I want to host live events and bring top voices to speak directly to the community.”

And his commitment is unwavering.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Medhin says. “I’ll keep growing this platform and impacting as many people as I can.”
