Guterres Warns of Most Dangerous Nuclear Moment Since Cold War

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is facing its most dangerous nuclear moment since the end of the Cold War, citing expanding arsenals, growing nuclear rhetoric and the weakening of safeguards built over decades.

Speaking at a UN General Assembly plenary meeting on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 29, Guterres said nuclear disarmament is a binding legal obligation rather than a voluntary gesture.

He called on nuclear-armed states to resume dialogue, take steps to prevent any use of nuclear weapons and reduce the role of such weapons in their national security policies.

Guterres also urged the United States and Russia to negotiate a successor framework to the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, known as New START, which limits the countries’ deployed strategic nuclear arsenals.

The Secretary-General said the erosion of nuclear safeguards and increasing reliance on nuclear weapons risk undermining efforts to prevent their use.

He called on countries to pursue a future without nuclear weapons, warning that the consequences of their use would extend far beyond individual states.

The remarks came during the high-level period of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where Guterres has held an extensive series of bilateral meetings with world leaders and senior government officials.
