Gunman Dies After Opening Fire Near White House Security Checkpoint

A man who opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House on Saturday evening was shot by officers and later died in hospital. The incident took place near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The suspect allegedly approached the checkpoint, drew a gun from a bag and began firing at officers. Security personnel returned fire, striking the suspect during the exchange.

No law enforcement officers were injured. A law enforcement official said the suspect had previously been issued a “stay-away order” and was described as an emotionally disturbed individual.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident, the Secret Service said. The agency is investigating the full circumstances of the attack.
