It was reported that a draft guideline is being prepared that will hold parents and guardians who do not send school-age children to school liable for committing crimes ranging from minor to serious violations of children's rights.

Ato Ketema Kewey, a senior specialist in education programming and quality improvement at the Ministry of Education, told the reporter that children of school age have the right to education.

He said that it is mandatory for children to receive education, but in the current situation, not all citizens, including those who are interested in learning, are coming to school.

He said this showed the need for mandatory legislation.

Ato Ketema, who noted that sending school-age children to school has been a requirement in previous education strategies, explained that the legal provisions that will result in accountability are being issued based on the “Draft Guidelines for the Implementation of Free and Compulsory Education,” which was drafted to implement the General Education Proclamation No. 1368/2014, which was approved months ago.

The official also stated that the guidelines do not include parents in areas of conflict and war.
