Greg Foran, the former CEO of Air New Zealand Ltd. and the American division of Walmart Inc., is set to become Kroger Co.’s next chief executive, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The company could make the appointment official as early as Monday, the sources said.

Kroger, headquartered in Cincinnati, has been led by interim CEO Ron Sargent since March, following the departure of Rodney McMullen. McMullen stepped down after an internal investigation into his personal conduct, the company said, without specifying the nature of the issues. His exit came amid a string of management departures and a failed $24.6 billion deal with Albertsons Cos.

Foran, a New Zealand native, previously revitalized Walmart’s US operations in the mid- to late-2010s by improving store conditions, reducing prices, and increasing employee pay. His potential return to the US marks a notable homecoming.

Under Sargent’s interim leadership, Kroger has continued to post strong sales, reflecting consumer prioritization of groceries and essentials. The company has accelerated new store openings, shuttered underperforming locations, and adjusted strategic priorities after the federal government blocked the Albertsons merger.
