Green Scene Energy PLC, an Ethiopian renewable energy firm, unveiled a locally manufactured solar-powered cooking stove named Tolo, aimed at expanding access to clean and affordable cooking solutions in rural and off-grid areas.

The product was launched at an event held at the Getfam Hotel in Addis Ababa, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Water and Energy, development partners, and investors in the renewable energy sector.

The Tolo cooking stove is designed to meet the needs of both urban and rural households, Green Scene Energy Chief Executive Officer Rekik Bekele said.

Rekik said the stove is designed for both on-grid and off-grid use, powered by solar energy through Direct Current Charging (DCC). The company said the product targets households and institutions that lack electricity, as well as users seeking cleaner and more efficient alternatives to biomass and charcoal.

Founded in 2016, Green Scene Energy operates across several regions, including Amhara, Oromia, and SNNPR, and distributes solar home systems and mini-grid solutions using a pay-as-you-go model in partnership with microfinance institutions and local retailers. The company has so far supplied more than 9,000 solar energy products nationwide and is expanding into solar appliance manufacturing.

The initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s National Carbon Market Strategy (2025–2035) and the 2035 Clean Cooking Programme, both of which aim to reduce emissions, promote sustainable energy, and ensure 75 percent of the population has access to modern cooking energy.
