Ghana has disbursed 85 percent of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s approved 2026 budget, channeling funds into mechanisation, irrigation, fertiliser distribution and poultry production as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen food security and reduce reliance on imports.

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem said 1.677 billion Ghanaian cedis had already been released for goods, services and capital expenditure under the ministry’s 2026 budget.

The funding package includes 581.4 million Ghanaian cedis allocated for the establishment of 50 Farmer Service Centres intended to improve mechanisation and farm productivity.

The government has also earmarked 515.3 million Ghanaian cedis for fertiliser and certified seed distribution, while 244.9 million Ghanaian cedis will finance the poultry-focused Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme.

Ampem said the authorities could no longer justify spending billions of US dollars annually on imported food products that could be produced domestically.

He added that a digital monitoring platform is being introduced to track the disbursement and utilisation of agricultural funds at district level.
