Ghana Moves to Select Investor for New National Airline After Two Decades

Mintesinot Niggusie

Ghana has launched a "market sounding" exercise to identify a strategic investor for a new national airline, more than 20 years after the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004. The proposed carrier will be based in Accra, which authorities aim to develop into a regional aviation hub.

Under the planned structure, the selected strategic partner is expected to hold a majority equity stake, emphasizing private-sector participation in operations. Investors must demonstrate operational experience and strong financial capacity.

The airline is expected to operate a full-service model with long-haul routes connecting Ghana to Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

The government is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the start of operations. Authorities say the initiative will improve air connectivity and support trade while strengthening Ghana’s global aviation position.
