Ghana Completes Evacuation of Nearly 1,900 Citizens From South Africa

Ghana has completed the evacuation of nearly 1,900 citizens from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks, with the final group of 41 returnees arriving in Accra on September 4.

The evacuation programme, which began in May, was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Ghanaians who voluntarily registered to return home amid security concerns.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa met the final group at Accra International Airport, marking the end of the government-led exercise.

Two Ghanaians who were killed in attacks were also repatriated during the operation, while another returnee died after arriving in Accra. The government recorded three deaths associated with the evacuation exercise.

Ablakwa thanked President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to the safety and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and urged those returning to remain resilient as they rebuild their lives in Ghana.

He also encouraged the returnees to put their skills and resources to productive use and contribute to the country's development.

The government has provided reintegration allowances to the returnees, but Ablakwa urged them to prioritise their health and seek medical care when necessary.

The minister said the Foreign Affairs Ministry would publish a full account of expenditure related to the evacuation, adding that several government agencies and private-sector partners had supported the operation.

The completion of the exercise marks the government's latest effort to assist Ghanaian nationals affected by insecurity abroad while supporting their return and reintegration at home.
