The German parliament has approved the introduction of voluntary military service, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s defence capabilities following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The legislation marks a significant shift in Germany’s defence policy and aligns with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s broader effort to build a strong European regular army.

Under the new system, all German citizens over the age of 18 will receive a questionnaire from January, asking whether they are willing to join the armed forces.

The decision has sparked opposition across the country. Students in around 90 cities have announced protests scheduled for Friday. Organizers posted on social media: “We don't want to spend half our lives locked up in a military camp, undergoing military training and learning to kill.”

Public debate continues over the law, with many Germans expressing scepticism about its implementation and long-term impact on society.
