
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be inaugurated on September 09, 2025, in the presence of African leaders and other invited guests, said Demeke Atnafu, Ethiopia's Deputy Ambassador to Kenya.
The Renaissance Dam, said to be the largest in Africa with a capacity of over five thousand megawatts of electricity, has been under construction at a cost of over five billion dollars.
Ambassador Demeke, in an interview with the BBC on Thursday, August 28, 2025, indicated that the official inauguration of the Renaissance Dam will take place on September 9 [Pagume 4/2017].
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which was supposed to be completed in five years, took more than a decade to complete, and the Ethiopian government announced that it would be officially inaugurated early next year.
Construction of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam began on March 24, 2003, and the entire construction took 14 years.
However, it is worth noting that Ambassador Nebiyat Getachew, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in a statement that detailed information regarding the dam's inauguration date and invited guests will be provided in the future.
