Protests in Geneva escalated into violence on Sunday as police deployed teargas to disperse demonstrators who set fire to a Tesla vehicle and damaged windows at a United Nations agency office, ahead of a Group of Seven summit taking place just across the border in France.

The unrest unfolded during a large march involving an estimated 20,000 people. The demonstration initially remained peaceful before segments of the crowd broke away and targeted what they described as symbols of concentrated economic and political power.

Among the sites attacked were a parked Tesla vehicle and a UN office, both of which were vandalised. Protesters also ripped bricks from the ground and threw them at police, as teargas spread through central Geneva’s streets, according to Reuters witnesses. Children were seen crying as crowds dispersed amid the smoke and confusion.

The violence comes against the backdrop of long-running demonstrations that often accompany G7 summits, where activists frequently mobilise against globalisation, inequality, climate change and capitalism.

The latest protest was explicitly framed by participants as opposition to the G7 itself, which they described as a symbol of concentrated global power. The timing coincides with heightened public debate over wealth concentration, following reports that Tesla owner Elon Musk, who has advised US President Donald Trump, became the world’s first trillionaire last week.

The escalation also highlights tensions ahead of the June 15 to 17 G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains on the shores of Lake Geneva. The meeting will bring together leaders from France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, alongside representatives of the European Union, amid heightened scrutiny of global governance structures and economic inequality.
