Gabon is considering a policy to restrict voting rights in banks and financial institutions to Gabonese citizens. Under the proposal, foreign nationals would be allowed to participate only if they obtain a special authorisation from the National Economy and Finance Committee, according to a government statement.
Officials said the plan is intended to reinforce economic sovereignty and ensure that key decisions in the financial sector remain under domestic control. It also aims to restore public confidence in the banking sector and address challenges related to credit allocation.
The government noted that the proposal aligns with broader efforts to strengthen governance at the national level.
Authorities said the measure would promote effective oversight, safeguard financial operations from external influence, and prioritize domestic interests in the management of banks and financial institutions.
