Mimi Beyene, an influential figure in Washington, DC’s nightlife scene, opened Powerhouse, a cannabis company, over the weekend in Washington, DC. Beyene, who began her career as a bartender at H2O and DC Live nightclubs, is entering a new industry with a business spanning cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, and dispensing.

Her expansion is particularly significant as a Black woman entrepreneur in an industry where Black business owners have faced barriers to financing, licensing, and ownership. Powerhouse operates across three segments of the cannabis market: growing cannabis, manufacturing cannabis products, and dispensing them to customers.

Beyene confirmed that all three operations are licensed and operational in Washington, DC. She said she has invested significant time, resources, and hard work into developing the business. Beyene, who moved to the United States from Ethiopia over 20 years ago, built her career in Washington, DC’s nightlife industry. After working as a bartender at H2O and DC Live, she went on to own and operate Mood Lounge, Vita Lounge, and Power Nightclub.

Beyene has long believed that success is measured not only by what a person achieves, but also by how many people they help along the way. “Every company I have built has been driven by the belief that businesses should strengthen communities, create jobs, and inspire others, especially immigrants, women, and aspiring entrepreneurs,” Beyene said. “Entrepreneurship has never been about simply opening businesses — it’s about creating opportunities.”

According to the company’s statement, Powerhouse is built on science, precision, and uncompromising quality. With Beyene’s extensive marketing experience and connections in the city, the company is seeking to establish a strong position in Washington, DC’s cannabis market.
