French Government Faces No-Confidence Challenge as Heatwave Fallout Intensifies

France’s minority government under Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is confronting a no-confidence motion in parliament, filed by opposition lawmakers who are criticising its handling of a severe late-June heatwave that continues to shape political debate in the country.

The motion has been backed by Green lawmakers, members of the hard-left France Unbowed party and one Socialist deputy, according to parliamentary officials. It is expected to be debated in the National Assembly on July 6, though it is widely seen as unlikely to succeed due to limited cross-party support.

Public health authorities have reported at least 1,000 excess deaths linked to the heatwave that swept across Europe since June 20, while warning that the final figure could rise. Some Green lawmakers have argued that deaths in France alone could be significantly higher, with estimates reaching up to 10,000, a claim the prime minister has rejected.

Political divisions over the government’s response have sharpened in parliament. Green party leader Cyrielle Chatelain has raised concerns about official handling of the crisis during recent questioning sessions, while government spokesperson Maud Bregeon has defended the administration, arguing that some political forces are contributing to tensions through the filing of the motion.

Meteorological conditions remain unstable, with national forecaster Météo-France reporting that temperatures, though easing from earlier peaks, continue to hover near 30°C in many parts of the country. A further rise is expected over the weekend, with another possible heatwave forecast for next week.

The political outlook for the motion remains constrained. The far-right National Rally has said it will not support the initiative, and the Socialist Party has not backed previous no-confidence attempts against the government since Lecornu assumed office last year.
