Four African countries have strengthened their ties with the Fund for Export Development in Africa as the equity investment arm of African Export-Import Bank expands its reach and increases its capacity to finance strategic projects across the continent.

Senegal and Liberia have acceded to the FEDA Establishment Agreement, while Zimbabwe and Angola have ratified it, bringing the fund’s membership to 24 countries.

The expansion gives FEDA a wider platform for investing in sectors including manufacturing, energy, logistics, agro-processing, financial services and strategic mineral processing. The fund provides equity, quasi-equity and other forms of long-term capital to businesses and projects aimed at economic diversification, regional integration and export development.

FEDA’s growing membership comes as African economies seek more domestic and regional capital for industrial projects and value-chain development. The fund said it will work with member governments to identify commercially viable investments and mobilise additional capital from public and private investors.

Its investment capacity has expanded substantially in recent years. Afreximbank has increased its commitment to FEDA from 100 million US dollars five years ago to 1.3 billion US dollars, allowing the fund to broaden its activities across countries and sectors.

Dr George Elombi, president and chairman of the boards of Afreximbank and FEDA, said the new memberships reflected growing confidence in African-owned financial institutions and their ability to mobilise capital for the continent.

"As the Afreximbank Group pursues its African industrialisation agenda, FEDA’s equity and quasi-equity instruments will become critical to executing strategic industrial projects at national and regional levels," Elombi said.

FEDA Chief Executive Emmanuel Assiak said the four countries offered investment opportunities across strategic sectors and that the expanded membership would allow the fund to build stronger partnerships with governments and private investors.

The fund said it intends to use its wider continental presence and increased capital base to support businesses, strengthen local and regional value chains and increase the supply of patient capital for strategic African investments.
