Ukraine's former energy minister has been detained as he tried to leave the country, authorities say.

German Galushchenko, one of the officials named in a corruption scandal last year and later removed from office, was reportedly detained on a train as he was leaving Ukraine.

He was named as one of several government officials involved in a $100 million fraud in November.

The corruption scandal had been feared to bring down the administration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky's administration came to power on a promise to eradicate corruption from the country before Russia invaded.

Zelensky's closest adviser and chief of staff during the war, Andriy Yermak, resigned after his home was searched.

Neither the president nor Yermak has been charged with any wrongdoing.

However, the corruption scandal has intensified pressure from the United States to hold elections in accordance with Ukraine's constitution, which were delayed by Russia's invasion in 2022.
