Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalised and is in "critical but stable condition," according to a spokesperson on Sunday.

His spokesperson, Ted Goodman, said no further details were immediately available on his medical condition or how long he has been receiving treatment. In a statement, Goodman described Giuliani as resilient, saying he has faced past challenges with determination and is showing the same response in his current condition. He also asked the public to keep him in their thoughts.

Giuliani, 81, served as mayor of New York City and gained national prominence for his response following the September 11, 2001 attacks, which led to him being widely referred to as "America's Mayor."

In later years, he became a legal adviser to former U.S. President Donald Trump during efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. Those actions led to criminal charges in two U.S. states and a defamation lawsuit filed by election workers. Giuliani has denied wrongdoing in those cases.

Trump reacted to the news in a social media post, praising Giuliani's tenure as mayor and describing him as the "best mayor in the history of New York City," while also criticising political opponents over how Giuliani has been treated.
