The government of Ghana is taking steps to bring back former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to face corruption charges. Ofori-Atta, who served from 2017 to 2024, is accused of embezzling millions of dollars in public funds during his tenure.
Now residing in the United States, Ofori-Atta has denied all allegations brought forth by Ghanaian prosecutors. He attributes the country’s economic crisis to the global pandemic and the mismanagement of currency devaluation, rather than any wrongdoing on his part.
Corruption allegations against outgoing high-ranking officials have become increasingly common in Ghana. In a recent case, authorities raided the home of a former central bank official — also a senior member of the previous ruling party — in search of a hidden safe allegedly containing stolen funds. However, the search yielded no evidence.
It remains unclear whether Ofori-Atta will voluntarily return to Ghana to face the charges. Prosecutors have indicated they will exhaust all available legal avenues before considering dropping the case.
