A 21-year-old Tallahassee resident, Omarion Laparis Rashad, has been indicted in federal court on a charge of possession of a machinegun, according to the office of United States Attorney John P. Heekin for the Northern District of Florida.

Rashad appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Martin A. Fitzpatrick for arraignment in Tallahassee. A jury trial has been scheduled for August 24, 2026, at 8:30am before District Court Judge Mark E. Walker.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James A. McCain and investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, the Tallahassee Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Authorities stressed that an indictment is an allegation returned by a grand jury and does not constitute evidence of guilt, with all defendants presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

The prosecution falls under the Homeland Security Task Force initiative, a federal interagency framework involving multiple law enforcement bodies aimed at addressing organised criminal networks, trafficking and related offences across the United States.
