The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has urged European Union member states to reinforce Ebola preparedness after Europe recorded its first imported case of the disease since the start of the current outbreak.

The case was confirmed after a doctor returning to France from the Democratic Republic of the Congo tested positive for Ebola, prompting health authorities to review emergency response measures and strengthen surveillance systems.

ECDC said the risk of sustained Ebola transmission within the European Union and European Economic Area remains very low, provided that countries maintain effective systems for early detection, patient isolation and treatment.

The agency has introduced a practical preparedness checklist for national authorities to assess their internal procedures and ensure health systems can respond quickly if further cases emerge.

Healthcare workers and people with direct contact with infected patients or communities in affected areas remain among those at higher risk of exposure, according to ECDC. The agency said Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids from infected people or animals and does not spread through the air.

ECDC has previously developed technical guidance covering public health responses, infection prevention measures and laboratory procedures related to Ebola cases. The agency said it remains in contact with French authorities and supports the steps taken following the confirmed case.

The development has renewed attention on the importance of international disease surveillance and preparedness measures as countries continue monitoring the spread of Ebola.
