Fed Holds Interest Rates Steady as Middle East Conflict Adds to Economic Uncertainty

The US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday as policymakers balanced solid economic activity against persistent inflation pressures and uncertainty linked partly to the conflict in the Middle East. The Federal Open Market Committee voted 9-3 to maintain the federal funds rate target range at 3.5 percent to 3.75 percent, continuing its policy of keeping ample reserves in the banking system.

The decision leaves the central bank focused on its dual mandate of achieving maximum employment and price stability, with officials signalling that inflation remains above the Fed’s 2 percent target. “Inflation remains elevated relative to the Committee's 2 percent goal,” the Fed said, citing supply shocks that have contributed to price increases in some sectors, including energy.

The central bank said economic activity has continued expanding at a solid pace despite elevated uncertainty, partly driven by the conflict in the Middle East. It pointed to strong productivity growth and capital investment as key supports for the economy. Labour market conditions have remained relatively stable, with job gains keeping pace with workforce growth and the unemployment rate showing little change, according to the Fed.

Three policymakers dissented from the decision. Beth M. Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie K. Logan preferred a quarter-percentage-point increase in the federal funds rate, arguing for tighter monetary policy. The Fed said it remains committed to restoring price stability as inflation continues to run above its long-term objective.
