A court in southern Ethiopia has sentenced a father to nine years and three months in prison after finding him guilty in a sexual assault case involving his 20-year-old daughter. The West Abaya District Court delivered the sentence after a legal process involving allegations that the defendant, identified as Inspector Girma Getachew, assaulted his daughter in Berber town, West Abaya District.

According to the district communication office, the incident occurred on May 14, 2026, at around 8pm, when the victim, identified as Hana Girma, was at her home in Kebele Seven of Berber town. The office said the victim alleged that her father used a government-issued handgun to threaten her before forcing her into a bedroom and committing sexual assault. Neighbours who heard her calls for help reportedly went to the area, heard her account and notified police.

The case was investigated and later taken through the court system, with the West Abaya District Court issuing a sentence of nine years and three months of strict imprisonment against the defendant. The district communication office announced the verdict but did not provide further details on the court proceedings or whether the defendant has the right to appeal.

This ruling highlights the judicial system's response to serious cases of sexual assault within families. Authorities have emphasised the importance of protecting victims and ensuring accountability in such sensitive matters.

The case serves as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to address gender-based violence and support victims in accessing justice.
